Tasmania reveals its wild heart in autumn. The summer crowds have gone, golden light stretches across ancient landscapes, and some of the world’s cleanest air — measured at Cape Grim — carries the crisp promise of adventure. Over sixteen days we travel deep into the island’s soul, with our own luxury coach accompanying us the whole way from Canberra and two overnight crossings of Bass Strait aboard the Spirit of Tasmania in private cabins.
We cruise into Wineglass Bay from the water rather than viewing it from the lookout above, and glide up the Gordon River with the engines down, the rainforest perfectly doubled in water so dark and still it barely seems real. We wander the convict-built Georgian streets of Richmond and Evandale, spend three nights in Hobart with Salamanca Market in full swing, and taste our way around Bruny Island in the company of the producers themselves. Further west there is the Wall in the Wilderness, the West Coast Wilderness Railway hauling up the Abt rack to Rinadeena Saddle, Dove Lake beneath Cradle Mountain with autumn colour still on the higher slopes, Tasmanian devils feeding after dark, the Nut at Stanley, and a full guided day in takayna / the Tarkine, the largest temperate rainforest in the Southern Hemisphere.
Extend your journey — Flinders Island, 4 days
Rather than turn straight for home, fly across to Flinders Island, one of the emptiest, most beautiful places in Australia: granite peaks rising straight from the sea, empty white beaches, a shipwreck coast and fewer than a thousand residents. Three unhurried nights at Lady Barron take in Strzelecki National Park, Trousers Point and Fotheringate Beach, fossicking for a Killiecrankie diamond, a farm visit with afternoon tea in the garden, and the sobering history of Wybalenna. Fully escorted, with return flights via Launceston and home to Canberra on Wednesday 19 May. Strictly limited to 12 rooms
